Shimojishima Airport (SHI) is Miyako's second airport, on Shimoji beside Irabu, where Skymark flies from Haneda, Kobe and Naha and Jin Air and Starlux fly from Korea and Taiwan; its terminal has a bike-assembly stand with free tools and a pump, and flight-timed buses reach Hirara in about 30 minutes for ¥600.
The airport opened as a pilot-training field with a 3,000 m runway, and its passenger terminal opened on 30 March 2019. A company whose owners include Mitsubishi Estate built the terminal and runs it. The terminal has a separate check-in building, and it's set up for people who fly with a bike. A stand for building and packing bikes sits next to the check-in building, and the information counter lends a full tool kit and a pump for every valve type at no charge.
Skymark is the domestic airline here, with flights from Haneda, Kobe and Naha through the winter and Fukuoka in the summer season. Jin Air flies from Seoul and Busan and Starlux from Taipei and Taichung. JTA, ANA and RAC use Miyako Airport on Miyako-jima (see mmy).
Two buses meet the flights. Kyoei's route 9 stops all the way through Irabu and Hirara to Miyako Airport and the Tokyu Hotel, and Chuo Kotsu's Airport Liner runs non-stop to the Hilton and Hirara. Both charge ¥600 to central Hirara. A taxi costs about ¥4,000 and takes 25 minutes, by the airport's estimate.

- Build the bike at the stand next to the check-in building, then leave the box at the information counter for ¥500 a day if it'll take it.
- Pay attention to the counter's hours, which follow the flights; arrange late pickups with Planet Four in advance.
- Route 9's 13:40 leaves by 14:05 even if the Kobe flight is late, so a delayed Kobe arrival may mean the Airport Liner or a taxi.
- Check the pickup on a rental booking: Shimojishima and Miyako airports are separate terminals.
