station

JMA's Naha observatory (block 47936) stands 28.1 m above sea level in Naha's Higawa district. Every figure in this file is JMA's published 1991–2020 normal, and rain days count the days with 1 mm or more.

winter

Okinawa's north-east monsoon starts around early October, and locals call its first cool push *miinishi* (literally the new north wind). From December to March the most frequent wind at Naha blows from the north-north-east or due north at an average of 5.2–5.3 m/s. The day's strongest wind reaches 10 m/s or more on 7.6 to 8.8 days a month in that stretch. February averages a high of 20.2 °C and a low of 15.1 °C, with 93.1 hours of sunshine across the month.

spring

In early spring a low from the East China Sea sometimes deepens fast as it crosses Okinawa. Once its cold front passes, a southerly wind swings round to a strong north or north-east wind and the temperature drops. Okinawans have long called this *ningwachi kajimaai* (the wind turn of the second lunar month).

summer

When the rainy season ends in late June the Pacific high pushes west and a strong south to south-west wind called *kaachiibee* blows steadily for several days. Naha's most frequent wind in July and August comes from the south-east.

typhoon

JMA counts a typhoon as approaching the Okinawa region when its centre comes within 300 km of a station there, and the 1991–2020 normal is 7.7 approaches a year. August averages 2.2 approaches and September 1.9. Across those 30 years JMA recorded no approach at all from January to March.

rainy

JMA's 1991–2020 average puts the start of Okinawa's rainy season around 10 May and its end around 21 June. JMA's preliminary dates for 2026 were around 4 May and around 29 June. Okinawans call the season *suuman boosuu* after two of the old solar terms that fall inside it. June is Naha's wettest month at 284.4 mm.

sea

Sea temperatures are our monthly averages of JMA's daily 1991–2020 sea surface normals at its fixed point off the south coast of Okinawa Island (沖縄本島南). The monthly figure runs from 22.2 °C in February up to 29.2 °C in August.

station

This file uses JMA's special regional weather station on Iriomote (西表島, block 47917). It records wind and every other element on this page. It stands 10.3 m above sea level at Sumiyoshi near Uehara on the north coast. The island's other JMA point is the Ohara AMeDAS station (block 1251) on the south-east coast, and it has no humidity normals. Every figure in this file is JMA's published 1991–2020 normal, and rain days count the days with 1 mm or more.

winter

North-east is the most frequent wind at the Iriomote station in every month from September to May, averaging 4.6–4.8 m/s from December to February. At Ohara on the south-east coast the winter wind comes most often from the north-north-east, in 26–31% of observations from December to February. December gets only 70.7 hours of sunshine and January 71.8, and rain falls on 12.0 to 14.1 days a month from December to March.

spring

In early spring a low from the East China Sea sometimes deepens fast as it crosses Okinawa. Once its cold front passes, a southerly wind swings round to a strong north or north-east wind and the temperature drops. summer

When the rainy season ends in late June the Pacific high pushes west and a strong south to south-west wind called *kaachiibee* blows steadily for several days. The Iriomote station's most frequent wind from June to August comes from due south.

typhoon

JMA counts a typhoon as approaching the Okinawa region when its centre comes within 300 km of a station there, and the 1991–2020 normal is 7.7 approaches a year. August averages 2.2 approaches and September 1.9. Across those 30 years JMA recorded no approach at all from January to March.

sea

Sea temperatures are our monthly averages of JMA's daily 1991–2020 sea surface normals at its fixed point north of Ishigaki (石垣島北). The monthly figure runs from 23.2 °C in February up to 29.4 °C in July. We use it because the Iriomote station sits on the north coast, and by our comparison JMA's point south of Ishigaki runs within 0.3 °C of it in every month.

station

JMA's Yonagunijima station (block 47912) stands 30 m above sea level in Yonaguni town. Every figure in this file is JMA's published 1991–2020 normal, and rain days count the days with 1 mm or more.

winter

Yonaguni has the strongest average wind of any station on this site. From December to March its most frequent wind blows from the north-north-east at 6.9–8.2 m/s on average, and the day's strongest wind reaches 10 m/s on 17.2 to 21.7 days a month. January brings only 52.8 hours of sunshine, with rain on 15.8 days. February averages a high of 21.3 °C and a low of 17.0 °C.

Yonaguni's most frequent wind from May to August comes from due south.

September is Yonaguni's wettest month at 285.7 mm.

sea

Sea temperatures are our monthly averages of JMA's daily 1991–2020 sea surface normals at its fixed point south of Yonaguni (与那国島南). The monthly figure runs from 23.7 °C in February up to 29.4 °C in July.

station

Yoron's JMA station is the Yoronjima AMeDAS point (block 1277), 14 m above sea level in Yoron town. It has rain normals for the full 1991–2020 period. Its temperature and wind normals start in 2000 and cover 2000–2020. Sunshine and humidity are not measured there, so those columns stay empty. The nearest full station is Okinoerabu (block 47942) about 50 km to the north-east. Its 1991–2020 normals give 83.6 hours of sunshine in January and 87.3 in February, with humidity at 66% and 68%. Rain days count the days with 1 mm or more.

winter

Yoron's winter wind comes most often from the north-north-west from January to March and from due north in December. It averages 5.6–5.9 m/s in those months, and the day's strongest wind reaches 10 m/s on 9.3 to 11.7 days a month. February averages a high of 19.8 °C and a low of 14.9 °C.

typhoon

Yoron belongs to JMA's Amami forecast region, where a typhoon counts as approaching when its centre comes within 300 km of a station. The 1991–2020 normal for Amami is 4.3 approaches a year, with September the busiest month at 1.3. JMA recorded no approach to Amami from November to March in those 30 years.

rainy

JMA's 1991–2020 average for the Amami region puts the start of the rainy season around 12 May and its end around 29 June. Its preliminary dates for 2026 were around 3 May and around 1 July.

sea

Sea temperatures are our monthly averages of JMA's daily 1991–2020 sea surface normals for the coastal strip JMA calls 奄美群島沿岸南東部 (area 619). That strip runs along the south-east shores of the Amami islands from Tokunoshima down to Yoron. The monthly figure runs from 21.4 °C in February up to 29.0 °C in August.

station

JMA has no station on Zamami. The Tokashiki AMeDAS point (block 1152) on Tokashiki-jima is the only station in the Kerama Islands with 1991–2020 normals. JMA's station list shows the Kerama AMeDAS point (block 1516) near Kerama Airport ending in January 2020, and JMA publishes no normals for it. The Tokashiki station stands 220 m above sea level, and by our comparison its monthly mean temperatures from December to March run 1.6–1.9 °C below Naha's. It has no humidity normals, so that column stays empty. Rain days count the days with 1 mm or more.

winter

Due north is the most frequent winter wind at Tokashiki, turning up in 17–23% of observations from December to March at an average of 4.9 m/s. The day's strongest wind reaches 10 m/s on 5.4 to 6.2 days a month in that stretch. February gets 97.6 hours of sunshine and 129.2 mm of rain over 11.3 days.

spring

In early spring a low from the East China Sea sometimes deepens fast as it crosses Okinawa. Once its cold front passes, a southerly wind swings round to a strong north or north-east wind and the temperature drops.
