Kabira Bay beach
川平湾24°27′ N 124°09′ EBeach
Kabira Bay's white beach is for walking only: Ishigaki City bans swimming because the bay deepens suddenly and the current runs fast, and it bans SUP and kayaks from the park too. Glass-bottom boats from the sand show the coral in about 30 minutes.

Ishigaki City's tourism site explains why the sand below Kabira Park is off limits for swimming: the bay drops away quickly and the tide pulls hard through the channels between the islets. Glass-bottom boats also come and go from the beach all day. Paddle at the edge, where the city says fish come right into the shallows, and take a boat for the coral.
For a swim on the same stretch of coast, head a few minutes west to Sukuji beach, which has a jellyfish net and lifeguards.

December to March
The bay opens to the north, so the winter north-east wind ruffles the surface on grey days. The glass-bottom boats keep running, and they are the way to see the coral at any time of year.
