RAC links Tarama Airport (TRA) on Tarama-jima with Miyako twice a day each way in about 25 minutes, First Flying flies there from Ishigaki, and the village runs a shuttle timed to the flights because the island has no taxi or private bus.
Tarama's airport opened on 10 October 2003, and RAC flies the 25-minute hop from Miyako twice a day each way, on Miyako Airport's published schedule. First Flying (第一航空) also links Tarama with Ishigaki, according to New Ishigaki Airport's route list. The Tarama ferry from Hirara is the other way in (see hirara-tarama).
The island has no taxi or private bus, according to Wikipedia, so the village runs a 26-seat shuttle that meets the planes and ferries and drives into the village centre, and most minshuku collect their guests. Tarama is home to about 1,200 people, and the village asks visitors to book meals ahead, since places to eat are few and close on irregular days.
Pick up the village's guide map at the airport before you set off. On Tarama a tuburi is a small lane running out from the middle of the oval island to the shore, and the map names 47 of them. The village says the flat roads on an island about 20 km around suit a bicycle.
