The island sits about 600 m off the Motobu coast, and the bridge that reached it in 1985 was the longest in Okinawa at the time. Wikipedia counts 817 residents in April 2012. The west coast belongs to Sesoko Beach and, since July 2020, the Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort.
The University of the Ryukyus runs a marine research facility on the south coast. The sandy beach of Anchi-hama by the foot of the bridge gives you a second swim on the way off the island.
Getting there
Cross the 762 m Sesoko Bridge, completed in 1985, from Kenken in Motobu. Prefectural Route 172 runs over the bridge and across the island.
Getting around
Car or bike; the island is small enough to walk between the beach and the bridge.
Riding on Sesoko-jima
Sesoko adds a short climb and a beach to any Motobu ride: over the bridge, across the island's low hills on Route 172 (the high point is 76 m) and down to Sesoko Beach on the west coast. Bikes park free at the beach during swimming hours.
December to March
Sesoko Beach faces west, away from the winter north-easterly, and its 2026 swim season ran from 7 March to 30 November. December to February is quiet, with the beach services shut.
Worth knowing
- Ride the bridge early for the view of Motobu port and Ie-jima's peak behind it.
