Miyako jofu is the island's fine ramie cloth, and Japan listed it as an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1978. The city's Traditional Crafts Centre in Ueno sells it and lets you watch trainee weavers on weekdays, and it runs no hands-on sessions at present. The craft village's weaving workshop teaches Miyako-ori instead. That cloth has a cotton warp and a ramie weft and usually comes in stripes, and you leave with a small mat after about an hour and a half. The ramie strap is the closest you'll get to the jofu thread itself.
Phone the workshop on 090-7165-9862 to book, especially for groups of five or more. The Tropical Plant Garden is on the eastern side of Hirara with free parking, and pottery and shell craft are among the village's seven other workshops.
