Okinawa Karate Kaikan

Okinawa Karate Kaikan, the prefecture's karate centre on the old Tomigusuku castle grounds, has exhibition rooms on the history of Okinawan karate (¥400 an adult, closed Wednesdays) and books visitors into hands-on karate sessions with a teacher at least a month ahead.
Karate grew out of Okinawa, and the Kaikan is where the prefecture tells that story. The exhibition rooms cover the history and the tools of training, and the main dojo, with four competition courts and 380 seats, hosts tournaments and gradings. The Shurei no Yakata, a smaller dojo under a red-tile roof with wooden walls, is kept for high-dan examinations and demonstrations.
If you want to train, send the booking form a month or more before your trip, because the Kaikan finds a teacher once your request arrives. The tile-breaking session gives you three tries at a practice tile and a certificate at the end, which suits children. The Kaikan is 14 minutes by car from Naha Airport with free parking for 100 cars, or take the Yui Rail to Onoyama-koen and the 101 or 105 bus to Tomigusuku-koen-mae, five minutes' walk away.
