The studio works with Ryukyu indigo made from plants grown in Yanbaru and keeps its vat going by natural ash fermentation, which gives the cloth a faint scent of its own. You fold and bind the fabric with string, beads, clips or boards, dip it as many times as the shade needs, and rinse it to reveal the pattern. Each dip deepens the blue, and navy takes seven to ten.
Okinawa Kogei no Mori is the prefecture's craft centre at Tomigusuku, close to the airport and the Okinawa Karate Kaikan, so the two make an easy morning together. Wear clothes you do not mind marking, although the studio lends gloves and an apron.
