Kumejima tsumugi is a silk pongee dyed with plants from the island, and Japan lists it as an Important Intangible Cultural Property. The co-op's centre in Maja lets you watch the weavers at work and then sit at a loom yourself. The coaster takes half an hour, and the bandana or shawl dyeing uses the island's plant dyes.
