The Kumejima Firefly Museum is a small town-run nature centre in Ota with a boardwalk biotope, and it opens 9:30–17:00 for ¥100; it tells the story of the Kumejima firefly, which flies from mid-April to early May and is a prefectural natural monument.
The Kumejima firefly was discovered in 1993 and became a prefectural natural monument on 4 February 1994, and the town opened this museum in May 2000. Inside there is a kids' room and outside a boardwalk biotope, with showers, toilets and a pavilion. In February you will not see fireflies, so treat it as a cheap rainy-day hour; the Hotaru no Kai's guided night walks run in the spring season.
Worth knowing
- Firefly season runs from mid-April to early May; never catch them or shine lights or a flash at them.
- Watch for habu snakes on the boardwalk at dusk, as the firefly guides warn.
