The castle stood on the top of the island and fell to royal forces in 1510, or 1506 by another account, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it the highest gusuku in Okinawa. After the war, US base construction destroyed part of it, and after reversion the summit became a Self-Defense Forces site. Part of the land came back in fiscal 2001, and visitors can now walk into the ruins. It is a national historic site, so stay on the paths and off the stonework.
