The Miyakojima City Tropical Botanical Garden is a free garden east of Hirara with about 1,600 subtropical tree species and a 400 m avenue of deigo trees that flowers in February and March.
The garden lies in Higashinakasonezoe, east of central Hirara, and holds about 1,600 kinds of subtropical trees, with butterflies and wild birds moving through the canopy. Its showpiece is a row of deigo coral trees about 400 m long that turns red in February and March. The Flower Kingdom section, designed by the gardener Ishihara Kazuyuki, was finished in 2011.
Entry is free and the grounds are open, which makes the garden a shaded recovery ride on a hot day or a sheltered one when the winter wind is up on the coast. Bring a picnic from the Atarasu market.
Worth knowing
- The deigo bloom lines up with a February trip.
- Sources disagree on the garden's size, so trust the tree count over the area.
