Ikema's village sits by the harbour where the Ikema Ohashi lands, and the Yabiji Center on the waterfront houses Ikema Shokudo and the boats out to the Yabiji reef. Bonito fishing has driven the island since 1906. The village was part of Hirara city before the 2005 merger, and it still counts as a ward of Hirara.
Most visitors come over for the bridge and stay for a gelato at Ninufa, which looks out at Heart Rock. The 38 ha wetland in the middle of the island is a national wildlife protection area and a quiet stop for birdwatchers.
