Eef Beach runs for about 2 km of white sand down Kume-jima's east coast and ranks among Japan's 100 selected beaches, and the town calls its shallow, calm water safe for small children; swim at high tide, since low water uncovers flats far out.
Eef runs about 2 km down Kume's east coast, and the town lists it among Japan's 100 selected beaches. The water is shallow and calm with a gentle slope, which is why the town recommends it for families with small children. At low tide the sand runs a long way out, so time a swim or a snorkel for the top of the tide.
Hotels and restaurants crowd the strip behind the sand in Higa and Janado, along with the tourism association's Eef Information Plaza. Tomari Fisherina, where the Hatenohama boats leave, and the causeway to Ou-jima are a short ride north along the coast.
