Ida-no-hama
イダの浜24°20′ N 123°43′ EBeach
Ida-no-hama is a white-sand beach beyond Funauki on Iriomote's south-west coast, a village with no road, and you reach it by a 10-minute boat from Shirahama and a 10–15 minute walk; it has no lifeguards.

Ida-no-hama feels like the end of Iriomote, because it nearly is: the road stops at Shirahama, the boat carries you across to Funauki, and a path through the village leads on to the sand. Iriomote Kotsu calls the water the clearest on the island and recommends it for a swim. Bring water and food from Shirahama or Funauki, and time your walk back to the boats.
Like the rest of Taketomi Town's beaches, it has no lifeguards, so swim with someone.
Before you swim
- Taketomi Town designates none of its beaches as official swimming beaches and posts no lifeguards; it asks swimmers to wear a life jacket or wetsuit and never to swim alone or after drinking.
- Habu-kurage box jellyfish occur in Okinawan and Amami waters from May to October; if stung, leave the water and pour plenty of vinegar on the sting before removing tentacles.
- No road access: plan around the Funauki boat times, and carry water.
December to March
In winter, check that the Funauki Kaiun boat is running before you drive out to Shirahama.
