Hatoma Lighthouse has stood on the 34 m hill of Hatoma Nakamori at the centre of the island since 1948, when it went up after shipwrecks nearby, and the hill looks across to the mountains of Iriomote.
The small lighthouse went up in 1948 to cut the number of wrecks in the surrounding waters. The lighthouse hill of Hatoma Nakamori is the high point of the island and the place named in the song Hatoma-bushi.
