The Funaura Causeway carries Iriomote's Route 215 across Funaura Bay east of Uehara on a flat stretch over the water that opened in 1976, with Pinaisara Falls visible up the bay.
The causeway opened in 1976 as part of the north coast road, and it runs straight across the mouth of Funaura Bay with sea on both sides. Look inland and Pinaisara Falls shows as a pale line on the hills above the mangroves. South of the causeway the bay is one of Iriomote's managed nature fields, paddled by canoe tours heading for the Hinai River.
For a rider it is a few flat minutes between headlands, and it is also a stretch the Iriomote Wildlife Conservation Center flags for cat sightings, from the causeway east to Nishi-Geeta. Slow down here at dusk.
Worth knowing
- Pull over at either end of the causeway rather than on it.
