Kakazu Takadai Park is a hilltop park in Ginowan built on Kakazu Ridge, where fighting raged for more than two weeks from about 6 April 1945 in the Battle of Okinawa. A Japanese pillbox and trench remains still stand in the park, and about half of Kakazu's residents died in the battle.
Ginowan city records that the fighting here began around 6 April 1945 and lasted more than two weeks, as Japanese forces held the ridge against the American advance on Shuri. Soldiers on both sides died in great numbers, and 53 percent of the people of Kakazu village were killed. Villagers, including older people and women, had been made to dig the Japanese positions before the battle.
Today the hill is a neighbourhood park. A concrete pillbox about 3 to 4 m square with walls some 70 cm thick survives on the south side, scarred where it took American fire, and it is the only one left in Ginowan. A trench entrance remains, and visitors may not go inside.
Worth knowing
- Ginowan city's own page on the battle explains each surviving structure; read it before you go.
- Visit as you would a memorial: the park is a local playground, and it is also the place where about half of a village died.
