Makiyama is the high point of Irabu at 89.0 m, and the white observatory on top is shaped like the sashiba, the grey-faced buzzard. From the deck you see Miyako's main island and pick out Ikema and Kurima. It sits in the south-east of Irabu, close to the end of the Irabu Ohashi.
For riders it is the highest climb on Irabu, and the deck shows the line of the bridge you have just crossed. In winter the top is exposed to the north wind.
Worth knowing
- Ride up from the Umi no Eki at the end of the bridge before heading on to Sarahama.
- The tourism association page dates from April 2019; check facilities locally.
