The Nago Castle ruins were picked for Japan's list of 100 cherry blossom spots, and the trees climb the hill in a garden of early-flowering hikanzakura. Rurubu counts about 3,000 of them. Walk up through the old castle ground to the lookout near the top of Nago-dake and the town opens out below you with the East China Sea behind it.
The Nago Sakura Matsuri sets up a stage and stalls at the bottom of the hill and closes the streets around the Nago crossroads. In 2026 it ran over the weekend of 31 January and 1 February, with a free shuttle from Nago fishing port up to the summit lookout. The prefecture describes the festival as Japan's earliest, held in January, and recent editions have landed on the last weekend of the month.
The park covers 59 ha in use of a planned 71.1 ha, so you can lose a quiet hour on its paths outside festival weekends. Combine it with lunch in town and a look at the Hinpun Gajumaru, Nago's protected banyan in the middle of the main street.
Worth knowing
- Take the festival shuttle from Nago fishing port on 2027's festival weekend instead of hunting for a space on the hill.
- The lookout sits at the top of a long run of stone steps, so wear shoes you can climb in.
