The DoubleTree is the Hilton's smaller sibling on the same Mihama shore, with 160 rooms and the beach and American Village both within a walk. The two outdoor pools split the crowd, one with a slide for families and a calmer one for everyone else, and the top of the slide doubles as a lookout. The airport is about 40 minutes by car via the West Coast Road. Canoe, diving and fishing trips can be arranged.
The summer pools are closed in winter, so a February guest comes for the beach walk and the evenings in American Village. Chatan's sea wall makes a flat, easy ride north toward Sunabe and the Kadena coast. Ask the hotel about a place for a bike, since it publishes no policy.
