Okinawa City formed in 1974 when Koza and Misato merged, and it is the most populous city on the island after Naha. It is home to eisa dance and Koza's base-town nightlife, along with the Okinawa Zoo and the Ryukyu Golden Kings' basketball arena.
Kadena Air Base and other US facilities sit within the city, and they gave Koza an international character all its own, with English signs and late-night bars. The city declared itself the town of eisa in 2007, and the All-Okinawa Eisa Festival fills Koza Sports Park each year. Okinawa City has also produced many of the island's musicians.
Sport runs through the year: the Hiroshima Carp hold their spring camp at Koza Shinkin Stadium, and the Ryukyu Golden Kings play their home games at the Okinawa Suntory Arena in the same sports park. The Okinawa Zoo & Museum stays open late on weekends, and the city's soba shops, from Wachichi's bonito broth to Misato Soba's free mugwort, rank among the most-viewed on its tourism portal.
