Todumari is the island name for the long beach that curves north from the mouth of the Urauchi River, and visitors know it as Tsukigahama, the moon beach. The Hoshino Resorts Iriomote Hotel stands behind it; it opened in 2004 while residents and supporters were suing to stop it, and the district and high courts rejected their claims. Old stories tie the beach to the river, among them one of a crocodile washed down from Mariyudu's pool in a flood.
Think of it as a walking and sunset beach. Iriomote's beaches carry no lifeguards and no swimming designation, and the river mouth is close by.
Before you swim
- Taketomi Town designates none of its beaches as official swimming beaches and posts no lifeguards; it asks swimmers to wear a life jacket or wetsuit and never to swim alone or after drinking.
- Habu-kurage box jellyfish occur in Okinawan and Amami waters from May to October; if stung, leave the water and pour plenty of vinegar on the sting before removing tentacles.
December to March
The beach faces the north-west and the winter north-east wind; on clear days it makes a long walk and a sunset spot.
