Yonaha Maehama Beach

Yonaha Maehama is a 7 km white-sand beach on Miyako-jima's south-west coast with jellyfish nets and lifeguards in season, and TripAdvisor has named it Japan's top beach several times.
Locals call it Maipama, and the sand runs 7 km from the Kurima Ohashi north-west past the Tokyu resort. TripAdvisor placed it first in Japan from 2013 to 2015 and again in 2019. It is also the swim start of the All Japan Triathlon Miyakojima each April, and the city holds its beach-opening ceremony here.
Free parking, changing rooms, showers and toilets sit behind the sand, and the café at the south-east end sells light meals and drinks. Typhoons in 2018 cut parts of the shore into steep steps, so watch small children near the edges. In season the city sets jellyfish nets and lifeguards; outside it you swim at your own risk.
