The Oku Co-op Store in Oku, Kunigami, opened in 1906 as the first of Okinawa's village-owned co-op stores and still serves the village near the northern tip of Okinawa Island.
Villagers opened the store together in 1906, and the idea spread until about 200 kyodo-ten, village co-op stores, served Okinawa's settlements in the 1970s. About 50 remained in 2019, and Oku's held its centenary in 2006.
For a rider rounding Cape Hedo onto the east coast, it is the place to buy a drink before the long, hilly run south toward Aha and Ada. We have not confirmed its 2026 hours, so carry enough water to reach the next stop if it is shut.
