Taco rice
タコライスDishYear-round
Taco rice is seasoned taco mince, shredded cheese, lettuce and tomato piled on white rice with salsa, invented in 1984 at Parlor Senri in Kin, outside the gate of the US Marine Corps' Camp Hansen. The King Tacos chain grew out of that counter and keeps its main shop in Kin.

Matsuzo Gibo ran Parlor Senri in the Shinkaichi bar district of Kin. When the yen floated and Marines had less to spend, he started putting the tacos that sold well at his bar on top of rice as a cheap, filling meal, and one account says it began as the staff dinner. The first version was rice and taco meat alone. Cheese and vegetables came later, and at the original counter they cost extra. The Senri name came from a second-hand shop sign.
The dish spread around the main island through King Tacos, and Parlor Senri itself closed on 29 June 2015. Okinawan schools have served taco rice at lunch since the 1990s, and mainland chains from KFC to Yoshinoya have sold their own versions. Okinawan shops often write it ターコライス with a long vowel. Charlie's Tacos in Koza belongs to the same postwar story, and Okinawa City calls it the island's first taco specialist.
Shops still play with the formula. Stone-grilled taco rice, taco soba and the egg-topped taco moco all turn up on Okinawan menus, and bento shops often swap the salsa for ketchup. Japanese Wikipedia adds that Okinawan makers leave chili con carne out of it.

FAQ
Quick answers about Taco riceよくある質問
Where was taco rice invented?
Taco rice was invented in 1984 at Parlor Senri in the Shinkaichi district of Kin, Okinawa, near the gate of Camp Hansen. Its founder Matsuzo Gibo put taco fillings on rice as a cheap meal for Marines. Parlor Senri closed in 2015, and the King Tacos chain carries the dish on in Kin.
Is taco rice Mexican food?
No. Taco rice is an Okinawan dish that borrows Tex-Mex taco fillings and serves them on Japanese rice. It was created in Kin in 1984 for US Marines stationed at Camp Hansen.
How do you order Taco rice?
Order taco rice (タコライス) by size, and check whether cheese and vegetables come as standard or as extras, since the original version was rice and taco meat alone. Spoon the salsa over to taste.
Is there a vegetarian Taco rice?
No. Taco rice is built on seasoned minced beef. Cafe Yabusachi in Tamagusuku lists taco rice and offers vegan food, so ask there, and elsewhere ask whether the kitchen can make it 'taco meat nuki' (タコミートぬき, without the taco meat).
