Henza-jima is the island at the end of the 4.75 km Kaichu Doro sea road in Uruma, and anyone driving or cycling to Hamahiga, Miyagi or Ikei crosses it. About 1,170 people live in its fishing village on the south shore, and an oil terminal fills the north of the island.

Before the road, people on Henza walked to the main island across the tidal flats at low water and took a boat when the tide was in. An American oil company built the Kaichu Doro in 1971 alongside its oil terminal, and in 1999 the prefecture rebuilt it with two lanes each way and the 280 m Henza Kaichu Ohashi so boats could still pass. The tanks now cover the north of the island and the reclaimed land toward Miyagi.
The village keeps to the old sandspit on the south shore, and its calendar still runs on the sea. Up to about 1940 more than 100 Yanbaru trading boats gathered here, carrying awamori and rice north and coming back with firewood and timber. Each year from the third to the fifth day of the third lunar month, Henza holds Sangwachaa to pray for good catches and safe fishing. Upstairs in Umino Eki Ayahashi-kan, Uruma's Sea Culture Museum keeps a model of a maaran trading ship that the city lists as a cultural property.
For a rider Henza is the junction of the whole island network. Turn south for the 900 m Hamahiga Ohashi, or go north past the tanks to the 17 m Tobaru Bridge and on to Miyagi and Ikei. The run along the terminal fence is short and exposed, and in a winter north-easterly it can be the hardest stretch of the day.
Getting there
Henza sits at the far end of the Kaichu Doro, the 4.75 km sea road that leaves the Okinawa main island at Yakena in Uruma. Uruma's tourism association puts the Katsuren peninsula about 20 minutes by car from the Okinawa-kita interchange of the Okinawa Expressway. Uruma City runs a paid local bus from the Yakena area out to the islands.
Getting around
Most visitors drive or ride. Sea Kayak Okinawa Kamome no Jonathan rents cross bikes and e-bikes from its boathouse opposite Umino Eki Ayahashi-kan, at the middle of the Kaichu Doro, and Uruma City's paid bus links the island villages with Yakena.
Riding on Henza-jima
The ride onto Henza crosses the 4.75 km Kaichu Doro, which runs flat and open with Kin Bay on the north side. On the island the road to Miyagi follows reclaimed land past the oil tanks, and the Hamahiga Ohashi leaves from the south shore. Expect wind more than climbing on this part of the loop.
Sea Kayak Okinawa Kamome no Jonathan rents cross bikes for ¥2,000 plus tax and e-bikes for ¥3,000 plus tax a day from its Kaichu Doro boathouse opposite Umino Eki Ayahashi-kan, 9:30–17:00 with no handovers from 12:00 to 13:00. It keeps 20 cross bikes and 4 e-bikes and asks you to reserve ahead.
December to March
From December to March the north-east monsoon blows across Kin Bay, and the Kaichu Doro and the open road past the oil terminal have no shelter from it. Sea temperatures around the islands sit at about 21–23 °C. Umino Eki Ayahashi-kan opens every day of the year, so the midpoint stop stays useful in the off-season.
Worth knowing
- Uruma's tourism association suggests checking the tide before you head out to the Kaichu Doro, and it publishes a tide table for Heshikiya on its website.
- Henza Nishi-gusuku, on the island's high point, is a village prayer site with a shrine inside its stone walls, so treat it as a place of worship.
- The road park around Umino Eki Ayahashi-kan at the middle of the Kaichu Doro has 300 parking spaces and a footbridge over the road.
