Gulf Oil paid for the first Kaichu Doro in 1971 and 1972 as its side of the deal that brought an oil terminal to Henza, and today the four-lane causeway is how every car and bike reaches the islands beyond. This route starts at Umino Eki Ayahashi-kan in the middle of it, where the car park is big and the boathouse across the road rents bikes. From the Henza end you ride past the tank farm and onto Miyagi, then down a coast road to the Nuchima-su salt factory before the Ikei Ohashi carries you to the last island.
Most of the 272 m of climbing comes on Miyagi, whose western plateau stands about 100 m above the sea. Our line takes the coast road out and back, and one short pitch near the salt factory reaches 14.7%. An e-bike flattens it. Ikei sits low on a limestone shelf, and its beach gate at 13.7 km makes a natural place to turn.
Coming home, swing south across the Hamahiga Ohashi at 24.5 km and roll down into Hama village. The road runs on to Higa, where Shirumichu and Amamichu hold the cave and the tomb that Ryukyuan tradition gives to the creator deities Amamikyu and Shinerikyu. People still come to pray at both, so walk up quietly and leave room for anyone at worship.
Uruma's own model course starts at Katsuren Castle and crosses the Kaichu Doro, and it suggests a rental bike for Hamahiga. Starting at the castle adds the World Heritage gusuku to the day. The Tour de Okinawa island loop also uses the causeway on its second day, riding out to Henza and back. In winter the north-east monsoon sweeps across Kin Bay with nothing to stop it, so check the forecast the night before and ride on the calmest morning you have.
Worth knowing
- Sea Kayak Okinawa Kamome no Jonathan rents cross bikes and e-bikes from its boathouse opposite Ayahashi-kan and keeps only four e-bikes, so book one ahead. Its prices are on our Henza page.
- Ikei Beach charges for day entry, so turn at the gate if you only want to see the water.
- Shima Parlor in Higa sells its mozuku clam chowder only in winter, so time the Hamahiga loop for lunch from December to March.
- Ride out on Route 10 and you reach the Ikei turn in under 14 km by our route data, so a rider short on time can drop the Hamahiga loop and still see three islands.
Ride safely
- Expect side-on gusts on the causeway and the Hamahiga Ohashi when the north-east wind is up.
- Shirumichu and Amamichu are working prayer sites. Lock the bike on the road, walk in quietly and keep your distance when a rite is under way.
- The crossing to Amamichu covers at low tide only, so read the Heshikiya tide table on Uruma's tourism site before you walk out.
- Hama and Higa are villages of narrow lanes, so ride through them slowly.

How long is the Kaichu Doro bike ride?
The Kaichu Doro ride from Umino Eki Ayahashi-kan to Ikei-jima and back, with a loop on Hamahiga, is 34.5 km with 272 m of climbing by our route data. The turn at Ikei Beach comes at 13.7 km, and most of the climbing is on Miyagi.
Can you cycle across the Kaichu Doro?
Yes. The Kaichu Doro is a public four-lane road with a central reservation, and bikes ride it with the traffic. The 280 m Henza Kaichu Ohashi section near the Henza end also carries a 3.5 m footway.
Where can you rent a bike at the Kaichu Doro?
Umino Eki Ayahashi-kan sits at the midpoint of the Kaichu Doro, and Sea Kayak Okinawa Kamome no Jonathan rents cross bikes and e-bikes from its boathouse across the road. The shop keeps 20 cross bikes and 4 e-bikes, takes no handovers between 12:00 and 13:00, and asks riders to book ahead.
Is the Kaichu Doro windy in winter?
Yes. From December to March the north-east monsoon blows across Kin Bay onto the Kaichu Doro and the Hamahiga Ohashi with no shelter. JMA's February normal at Nago is north-north-east at 3.8 m/s, and gusts on the open causeway run stronger.
