Ogami

Ogami is a 0.24 km² sacred island of 20 people off Miyako-jima's north coast; the Ogami Kaiun ferry from Shimajiri is the only way over, and visitors may walk only in the village.
The kanji for Ogami mean great god. Most of the land outside the small settlement by the port is sacred, and outsiders may not enter; at times islanders stay out too. Its Uyagan ancestor rite is a secret festival closed to men, and much of its history is kept by word of mouth. The summit lookout at Tomidai, 74.4 m, sits beside a rock called Tumbara that islanders hold sacred.
A road around the island was planned and never finished. Islanders say the work stopped after machines broke down and workers fell ill, and the road still dead-ends near the east and north ends. Keep to the village by the port, and keep cameras away from rituals. The island's only restaurant, Opyuu Shokudo, sits a minute from the landing and serves kaaki-dako, the island's dried octopus, over rice.
Getting there
Take the Ogami Kaiun ferry from Shimajiri port on Miyako's north coast; it makes four round trips a day, and a 2026 traveller timed the crossing at about 15 minutes. Ogami is the only inhabited island in Miyako City with no bridge.
Getting around
On foot, inside the settlement by the port. Most of the island outside the village is sacred and closed to visitors.
Riding on Ogami
Leave the bike at Shimajiri. Ogami is 0.24 km² with an unfinished road, and visitors keep to the village by the port.
December to March
Check sailings with Ogami Kaiun on windy winter days, and carry a layer for the open deck.
Worth knowing
- Check the ferry times before you go; four round trips a day leaves long gaps.
- Ask before you photograph people, and never enter areas marked as sacred.
