Urauchigawa Kanko runs the sightseeing boats about 8 km up the Urauchi River on Iriomote to Gunkan-iwa, from ¥3,000 for adults in 2026, and sells a self-guided add-on walk to Mariyudu and Kampire falls.
Boats leave the landing by Urauchi Bridge on the north coast road and push upstream between banks of mangrove until the river narrows at Gunkan-iwa. The captain points out the sights on the way up. From the upper landing a maintained path follows the river into the forest, and the Mariyudu Falls lookout comes up after about half an hour on foot, with the wide Kampire cascades another 15 minutes on.
Because the walk needs no guide, this is the easiest way into the interior now that Pinaisara and Sangara sit behind a permit and a registered guide. The longer cross-island trail beyond Kampire belongs to the Urauchi headwaters field, which takes 50 people a day with a guide or after the town's lecture. Take the morning boat if you want time at the falls, because the last pickup at the upper landing sets your limit. After rain the path turns to mud, so wear shoes you can rinse.
