The prefecture records the Aka Ohashi as a 530 m bridge opened on 24 June 1998, built for about ¥5.1 billion, and it won the Japan Society of Civil Engineers' Tanaka Prize that year. The Ministry of the Environment says you can see turtles from the deck, and looking west you take in the Sakubaru rocks on Aka's shore. For anyone on a bike it is the start of the only ride between islands in the Keramas.
Worth knowing
- Stop at the high point of the arch and look straight down for turtles.
- Cross on foot if the wind is strong.
