Yonehara's Yaeyama palm grove is one of only three natural stands of the Yaeyama palm, which grows wild only on Ishigaki and Iriomote, and a boardwalk leads beneath palms 10 to 20 m tall beside Route 79. It makes a cool, shaded ride stop.
The Yaeyama palm grows wild in only three places, two on Iriomote and this one at Yonehara, according to Ishigaki City's tourism site. A wooden walkway takes you in under trunks that rise 10 to 20 m, and Ishigaki skinks with bright blue tails live in the grove.
On a ride round the island this is the shady stop on the north-west coast. Parlor Papaya next to the grove squeezes fresh juice, and Yonehara beach lies a few minutes further toward Kabira.
Worth knowing
- Pair the walk with a juice at Parlor Papaya next door, which closes on Wednesdays.
