Nagura Anparu is a Ramsar-listed mangrove and tidal-flat wetland at the mouth of the Nagura River on Ishigaki's west coast, and the coast road crosses it on a sandbar between town and Kabira. Low tide shows its crabs and birds best.
Anparu is the local name for the lagoon behind a 2 km sandbar at the head of Nagura Bay, where six species of mangrove grow and fiddler crabs work the mud at low tide. Japan made it a national wildlife protection area in 2003 and it joined the Ramsar list in November 2005. Since 2007 it has formed part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park.
The coast road runs along the sandbar, so a rider crosses the whole wetland on the way to Kabira. Ishigaki City's tourism site points to the car park north of Nagura Ohashi bridge for nature watching from the bank, and canoe tours go deeper in.
Worth knowing
- Check a tide table and come within a couple of hours of low water.
- Yaima-mura and its drive-in sit on the hill just inland.
