Katsuren is the southern half of the Yokatsu peninsula in Uruma, where the World Heritage castle of Katsuren stands above Okinawa's mozuku farms. Boats for Tsuken leave from its Heshikiya port, and it was its own town until the 2005 merger.

The peninsula pushes east from central Okinawa between Kin Bay to the north and Nakagusuku Bay to the south, and Katsuren takes the southern half. The lord Amawari ruled from Katsuren castle, which stands on a cliff above the coast. Offshore lie the mozuku farms that give the Katsuren area about 40 percent of Okinawa's crop.
Heshikiya, at the peninsula's tip, keeps an eisa that Uruma calls the oldest traditional eisa in Okinawa, performed barefoot at the lunar Obon, and its port sends the boats to Tsuken. Menya Marusho serves soba in the village before the ferry.
