Aragusuku, written 新城 and often read Shinjo, sits a short way north-west of Yoshino along the same coast. The city describes tropical fish and coral in the shallows by the sand, and the access road is wider and simpler to drive than Yoshino's. The car park is small, so arrive early.
Snorkelling accidents happen on Miyako every year, and the city's safety leaflet asks swimmers never to go alone, to learn the snorkel before using it in open water and to keep off the coral. Follow it here: the reef sits close and shallow, and a fin kick at low tide does damage.
Before you swim
- Coral sits close to the sand; do not stand on it
- Do not snorkel alone or when a wave advisory is in force
December to March
Marea Miyakojima puts March water at 21–23 °C, and JMA normals give Miyako a February average high of 21.1 °C. The beach faces the open sea on the east side of the island, so snorkel on calm days only and wear a wetsuit.
