The beach opened in 1991 on the Wakasa side and in 1999 on the Tsuji side, and by 2000 it was drawing about 235,000 visitors a year. Naminoue-gu shrine stands on the cliff above the sand, and the Naha West Road bridge crosses the water beside it. It works best as a swim at the end of a city day or before a late flight, with the airport about 15 minutes away by car.
The managers run it as part of Naha Beach Resort, a strip of parks along about 1.9 km of the west coast that also takes in Naminoue Umisora Park and the Wakasa seaside park, with barbecue areas and a diving spot. Showers and changing rooms are on site, and since 2001 the beach has added accessible toilets and showers and an amphibious wheelchair to become barrier-free.
Before you swim
- Habu-kurage box jellyfish appear from May to October; Okinawa nets many swimming beaches from June to October against them, and vinegar poured on a sting before removing tentacles is the standard first aid.
- Swim only inside the marked area; the beach sits beside Naha port and the Naha West Road bridge.
- The park closes when a storm warning is in force.
December to March
Swimming season ends in October and starts again in April, so from December to March this is a place to walk and sit by the water on Naha's East China Sea shore.
