Kudaka-jima is a flat 1.38 km² island off the Chinen peninsula in Nanjo that Ryukyu belief holds sacred; boats from Azama port take 15–25 minutes, and the island is best explored slowly by rental bike.
Ryukyu myth says the creator goddess Amamikiyo came down to Kudaka from heaven to begin making the land, and that the five grains washed ashore here at Ishiki-hama in a jar. Kings of Ryukyu once crossed to worship here with the high priestess, the Kikoe-ogimi, and later worshipped the island from Sefa-utaki across the strait. Kudaka is still a working place of worship. Fubo-utaki (Kubo-utaki), its most sacred grove, is closed to visitors all year, and other prayer sites close at certain times.
About 240 people live here, in a village of old stone walls near the port. Land is still held in common by the community, a system written down in the 1988 Kudaka Land Charter after a resort plan threatened two-thirds of the island, and the island has no hotels and only a handful of places to eat. The famous Izaiho ritual, held once every twelve years for the island's women, has not taken place since 1978.
Ride slowly and greet the people you pass, as the island asks. Islanders want swimwear kept for the beach and every stone and piece of coral left where it lies, and coconut crabs, an endangered species here, are off limits. Swimming is allowed only at Meegi-hama, just north of the port, where there are no lifeguards or jellyfish nets.
Getting there
Kudaka Kaiun runs a high-speed boat (about 15 minutes) and a car ferry (about 25 minutes) from Azama port in Chinen, with six round trips a day between the two boats according to Nanjo's port listing. By bus from Naha, take route 38 (Shikiya line) from the Naha Bus Terminal to Azama Sun Sun Beach Iriguchi, about an hour, then walk five minutes to the port.
Getting around
On foot or by rental bike. Three bike rental counters operate in the village and at the port, including electric-assist bikes at the ferry waiting room, and Rental Kudaka hires e-bikes and electric kick scooters. Nanjo's tourism office reckons about two hours to ride around the island.
Riding on Kudaka-jima
Kudaka is flat, topping out around 17 m, and many of its roads are unpaved. The islanders ask riders to go slowly, especially in the village, where the lanes are narrow and corners blind. Nanjo's tourism office puts a lap of the island at about two hours on a rental bike.
Bike rental at the community centre (Tamagusuku), at Parlour Sabani, and at the ferry waiting room run by the NPO Kudaka-jima Shinkokai (electric-assist bikes); Rental Kudaka hires e-bikes and electric kick scooters.
December to March
Boats run year-round, but schedules change with the season and sea conditions, and wind or swell can cancel sailings; Kudaka Kaiun posts updates on its website and X account. Island events can change restaurant hours or close roads, as during the eighth-month festival from 20 to 22 September 2026. In winter the low island is exposed to the northeast wind, so bring a windproof layer for the ride.
Worth knowing
- Bring cash, because Kudaka has a small post office but no ATM, and two village shops instead of a konbini.
- Book a local guide through the Kudaka-jima guide association if you want the sacred sites explained.
- Check the boat times before you set out; the last boat back sets your day.
