Zamami-jima is a 6.70 km² island in the western Keramas that the high-speed Queen Zamami reaches from Naha's Tomari Port in 50 to 70 minutes, and from early January to late March it is the base for humpback whale watching in the Kerama Shoto National Park.

The village sits in a bowl behind the harbour, and the shops and places to eat crowd around the port. One road runs west to Ama, where the beach and campground look across the channel to Aka. The other heads east to Furuzamami Beach, which holds two stars in the Michelin Green Guide. About 600 people live on Zamami, and its shoreline runs 23.2 km.
Humpback whales come into Kerama waters to breed and raise calves from late December to about April, according to the Ministry of the Environment. The Zamami Whale Watching Association has run its boats since 1991, and each morning in season its spotters scan the sea from the lookouts and radio the captains. Okinawa Churashima Foundation researchers who matched 21 years of fluke photographs found pairs and mating groups most often from late January to late February. Mothers with newborn calves grew more common from mid-February to late March, so late February falls inside both windows.
A Japan Tourism Agency guide credits the Kerama boats with a 90% sighting rate, which is the guide's own figure, and the association publishes no season log that we could find. The Ryukyu Shimpo reported the first whale of the 2024–25 winter on 24 November and a newborn calf on 30 November, and called that calf the earliest the association had confirmed in 33 years. During the 2026 season the association posted that there were few whales about. Its 2026 tours ran from 8 January to 25 March.
The island joined the Kerama Shoto National Park when the park was created on 5 March 2014, and the sea around it has been a Ramsar wetland since 2005. The Ministry of the Environment calls the water Kerama blue, over reefs thick with table, branching and horn corals. Kerama deer live only in these islands, and the village says they roam the forest on Zamami as well as Aka and Geruma. On 26 March 1945 US forces made their first landing of the Battle of Okinawa on Zamami, and many residents died, including those lost in the mass suicides the village still remembers.
Getting there
The village runs two boats from the north bank of Tomari Port in Naha. The high-speed Queen Zamami takes 50 to 70 minutes and runs several times a day. Ferry Zamami takes about two hours with a call at Aka, and it carries bicycles as freight. The village boat Mitsushima shuttles between Zamami and Aka every day and runs to Aharen on Tokashiki when someone books it by 17:00 the day before.
Getting around
The village bus runs every day between Zamami Port, Ama Beach, Asa and Furuzamami Beach, and you buy tickets from the machine at Blue Yukuru-kan beside the port. The island has no taxis. Rental Ishikawa, Rental Kaniku, Asagi Rent-a-car and Zamami Rent-a-car rent scooters, and several shops in the village rent bicycles, e-bikes and kick scooters.
Riding on Zamami-jima
Zamami's roads are short and steep. One runs west from the village to Ama and another heads east to Furuzamami Beach, and a spur climbs to the Takatsuki-yama lookout at about 137 m. The Ministry of the Environment puts Inazaki 3.1 km from the port by road and Takatsuki-yama 1.5 km, so a morning on an e-bike covers both lookouts.
Rental Ishikawa, Rental Miyamura, Oki Rental, Umikaji and Zamamia International Guesthouse rent bicycles, and Green Ride (IRIE Zamami), Oceana Port Village, Summer House Yuyu and Rental Ishikawa rent e-bikes. Ferry Zamami carries bicycles as freight from Tomari.
December to March
North wind from December to March can cancel the boats from Tomari, and the village tourism association tells visitors to check the forecast and the sailing status before they travel. Humpback whales are in Kerama waters from late December to about April, and the Zamami Whale Watching Association's 2026 tours ran from 8 January to 25 March. The Japan Meteorological Agency's closest coastal sea area to the Keramas lies south of the Okinawa main island, and its 1991–2020 normal sits at about 22 °C through February. The village clinic closes at weekends and the island has no convenience store, so bring medicine and cash.
Worth knowing
- On a day too rough for the boats, walk or ride up to the Inazaki lookout on the north coast with binoculars; the Ministry of the Environment suggests searching for blows from the island lookouts when the boats stay in.
- Buy village bus tickets from the machine at Blue Yukuru-kan before you board, since the bus no longer takes fares and the Furuzamami and Asa stops have no machine.
- Bring enough cash from Naha. The tourism association says many shops take cash only and the ATMs on Zamami and Aka may be unavailable at night and on holidays.
- Every passenger landing on Zamami pays the village's ¥100 Churashima tax with the ferry fare; junior high students and younger are exempt.
