Yoron Minzoku-mura is a private open-air folk museum in Mugiya on Yoron's south-east coast, where the Kiku family shows rebuilt thatched houses and tools and keeps the island's bashofu weaving alive, open 9:00–18:00 daily for ¥500.
The Kiku family started collecting tools and moving old houses here when the economic boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s began to sweep away island life, and the result is a village of cone-roofed thatched houses and a cattle-driven sugarcane press. Staff walk you round and explain how the island lived. The village is the last place on Yoron still weaving bashofu (banana-fibre cloth), and Yoron's bashofu-making skills are a national important intangible folk cultural property.
Classes in plant dyeing and bashofu weaving run by reservation, and the shop sells the house papaya pickles and pork miso, with tasting.
Worth knowing
- Book a craft class a day or more ahead; the bashofu coaster class takes one or two people at a time.
