Yoron-jima

Yoron-jima is the southernmost island of Kagoshima Prefecture and lies about 23 km north of Cape Hedo on Okinawa; the flat 20.58 km² coral island is reached by a 40-minute flight from Naha or a 2 hour 30 minute ferry from Motobu and is known for the Yurigahama sandbar that rises at low tide.
Yoron belongs to Kagoshima and to the Amami islands, but Okinawa is the neighbour you can see: Cape Hedo is about 23 km away across the strait, and islanders still cross to Naha for school and for the hospital. About 5,000 people live here, most of them in and around Chabana. The town named its main shopping street Ginza-dori in the tourist boom before Okinawa's reversion in 1972, when Yoron was the southernmost island in Japan. The island's own language is Yunnu futuba, and Wikipedia describes its sounds as close to Okinawan and its grammar as close to Amami.
The sea is the point of the trip. Off the east coast the sand flat at Yurigahama surfaces about 1.5 km out from Oganeku beach when the tide falls far enough, and glass-bottom boats run out to it from Oganeku and Minata beaches and from Mugiya harbour. The island's few heritage sites cluster in the south-east, where the unfinished Yoron Castle of a Hokuzan prince became a national historic site in March 2025 and the Yoron Minzoku-mura keeps old houses and bashofu weaving alive.
The evenings belong to the izakaya of Chabana, and to Yoron kenpo, which is how the island welcomes guests with shochu. The host fills a large red lacquered cup with 20% Shima Yusen kokuto shochu from the island's distillery, gives a short speech of welcome and drinks; then the cup goes to each guest in turn, who speaks and drinks, then returns the cup without ever setting it down. The ritual leaves room to bow out: say 'too' (enough) while the host pours, or give your speech and hand the full cup back, and the host drinks it for you.
Getting there
Ryukyu Air Commuter flies from Naha to Yoron every day in about 40 minutes, and Japan Air Commuter flies from Kagoshima in about 1 hour 40 minutes. The Kagoshima–Okinawa ferries of A-Line and Marix Line call daily, and the two companies alternate: the southbound ships leave Yoron for Motobu and Naha in the afternoon, and the northbound ships leave Naha at 07:00 and Motobu at 09:20 to reach Yoron at 11:50, about 2 hours 30 minutes from Motobu and 4 hours 50 minutes from Naha.
Getting around
No buses or taxis meet the planes or ships, so arrange a rental car, an inn pick-up or a taxi before you land. Minami Rikuun's bus circles the island in both directions in about 40 minutes for a flat ¥200, and stops anywhere if you raise a hand. Nangoku Rent-a-car and Yoron Rent-a-car rent bicycles and e-assist bikes, and the island's one taxi firm runs two cars.
Riding on Yoron-jima
Yoron is a flat coral terrace 23.7 km around, with a high point of 97.1 m, so an ordinary or e-assist bike covers it comfortably; the tourism association says a car circles it in about an hour on the Yoron loop road (Kagoshima Route 623). The island has a single traffic light, in Chabana, and the association asks drivers to watch for elderly drivers and children on narrow roads with few signs.

December to March
Yoron is cooler in winter than the Yaeyama islands: Wikipedia's JMA-based table for the Yoron station gives February a mean of 17.3 °C and an average high of 19.8 °C. The tourism association puts the swimming months at May to October, and Shima no Eki Kurumado closes in January and February. Check the association's Yurigahama appearance calendar before booking a boat, and note that the Yoron Marathon is held in early March.
Worth knowing
- Book your rental car or inn pick-up before you fly or sail; nothing waits at Yoron airport or port.
- Check the Yurigahama appearance calendar on yorontou.info and book the boat for the day's low tide; some days the sandbar does not show.
- If you join a kenpo, keep the cup in your hand until you return it; setting it down breaks the round.
- The island bus stops anywhere you raise a hand, which makes a stay without a car workable.
