Haebaru is a 10.76 km² town of about 41,500 people just east of Naha; it is the most populous town in Okinawa and the only municipality in the prefecture with no coastline.
Haebaru is surrounded by six municipalities, Naha among them, and it is the only one in Okinawa that does not touch the sea. It is the prefecture's most populous town, and its population has been climbing in recent years. The town also holds the ruins of the wartime Haebaru Army Hospital shelters.
Most visitors pass through it on the Okinawa Expressway, whose Haebaru-minami interchange is the closest exit for Okinawa World and Gangala Valley, about 10 minutes away by car.
