Nanjo's tourism office calls Tamaya the most popular soba shop in the south, busy every day with locals and visitors. The thin noodles sit in a broth that balances bonito and pork, light but full of flavour, and there is a long list of meat toppings. A tub of yomogi, the bitter mugwort Okinawans call fuchiba, sits out free.
Ozato is on the inland road between Yonabaru and the Nanjo hills, so Tamaya suits a ride out of Naha toward the east coast. Opening at 10:00 makes it an early lunch.
What to order
- Okinawa soba with a meat topping and plenty of the free yomogi (mugwort)
Worth knowing
- Go before noon to beat the queue.
