The Hirakubo peninsula runs north from Ibaruma as a long, thin finger of farmland and hills, with prefectural Route 206 along it. Hirakubo village sits near the top, and the lighthouse road climbs on to the cape. In the 17th century a watch station here looked out for foreign ships, and Japan made it a national historic site in 2007.
Ishigaki Sunset Beach at Kuura, on the peninsula's west side, has clear water and paid showers, with marine sports from early summer to autumn. In early summer a colony of sagaribana trees, whose flowers open for a single night, blooms at Hirakubo, and the city's tourism site recommends late evening to see it.
Few places sell food on the peninsula, so carry lunch or eat at Akaishi Shokudo near Ibaruma on the way up, Thursday to Saturday. The headland is fully exposed to the winter north-east wind.
