Ishigaki's town centre spreads around the island ferry terminal on the south coast of Ishigaki-jima, with the Misaki-cho bar streets and the covered Euglena Mall a short walk from the boats, and many visitors to the Yaeyamas sleep here. Ishigaki City had 47,148 residents on 1 September 2026, by the prefecture's estimate.

The town runs along the flat south coast, and the ferry terminal at Misaki-cho is its hinge: boats leave from here for Taketomi, Kohama, Kuroshima and Hatoma through the day, and the Azuma bus terminal sits beside it. North of the terminal the grid of Misaki-cho and Okawa holds most of the shops and restaurants. Euglena Mall, which calls itself Japan's southernmost covered arcade, shelters the public market; the market has fed the town since 1899 and reopened after a rebuild in May 2021.
In the evening, min'yo izakaya in Misaki-cho such as Usagiya and Yuikaji put sanshin players on stage, and the Ishigaki beef rooms fill early, with Yakiniku Yamamoto and the JA's Watanabe both asking for reservations. Mornings start early: Tofu no Higa serves yushi tofu from 6:30, and KLATCH COFFEE opens at 7:00.
Riders get a climb on the doorstep, because Banna Park's Skyline road starts about 4 km north of town, and the coast roads lead off east toward Shiraho and west toward Kabira. The town side of the island sits away from the winter north-easterly. Plan for Ishigaki City's accommodation tax, which starts on 1 February 2027 at 2.0% of the room-only rate per person per night, capped at ¥2,000.
