Kin is a town of about 11,600 people on central Okinawa's east coast, beside the Marines' Camp Hansen, and the birthplace of taco rice. The dish was first served in 1984 in Kin's Shinkaichi bar district.
Matsuzo Gibo ran Parlor Senri in the Shinkaichi bar district outside Camp Hansen's gate. In 1984, seeing Marines watch their money after the switch to floating exchange rates, he put taco fillings on rice as a cheap, filling meal, and the King Tacos chain that grew from his shop carried the dish around the island. When Commodore Perry's squadron visited in 1853, its men camped on a hill north of Namisato, which locals afterwards called Oranda-mori, the Dutchmen's forest, because they called all Westerners Dutch.
