Ohara

Ohara is young by Iriomote standards: farmers from Aragusuku settled here in 1938 and 1941, on the south bank of the Nakama River. The harbour is officially Nakama port, though everyone calls it Ohara port, and the village's shops and car rentals cluster around it. Taketomi Town counted 283 people in the Ohara district at the end of August 2026. The town has long planned to move part of its office here from Ishigaki, though Wikipedia notes the plan has shrunk and has no building date.

The Nakama River cruise leaves from in front of Shop Jugon, a short walk from the terminal, and Yubu-jima and the Iriomote Wildlife Conservation Center lie 15–25 minutes north. South of the village the prefectural road ends at Toyohara, and Haemida, the long beach at the island's southern tip, lies about 3 km beyond.

The Uehara route crosses open sea north of Ishigaki, while Ohara's harbour is less exposed, and on rough winter days the Ohara boats often keep sailing after the north-coast route stops. Plan a winter arrival and departure through Ohara for that reason.
