Kanbire spreads sideways: the river runs broad and shallow down a staircase of sandstone for about 200 m, over rocks pitted with round potholes. The Taketomi Town tourism association says the name means 'seat of the gods' and that the gods of 15 places on Iriomote gathered here to decide how to make the island. It lies about 250 m above Mariyudu on the same trail, and the boat package takes in both.
Treat the rocks as part of a sacred place, and keep to the trail; the island's rules ask visitors to leave plants and animals where they are.
Worth knowing
- Stay away from the river after heavy rain or a weather warning, as the island's rules advise.
