Oku is the small settlement at the northern end of Okinawa Island's east coast in Kunigami, where the island's first village co-op store opened in 1906.
Oku sits just round the corner from Cape Hedo, where the coast road turns south down the Pacific side. Its co-op store, opened by the villagers in 1906, was the first of the kyodo-ten that later served settlements across Okinawa. Oku-Yanbaru no Sato offers visitor programmes and lodging in the village.
For riders Oku marks the start of the hilly east-coast road toward Aha and Ada. Fill up here: the stops ahead are small and far apart.
