Yonabaru is the smallest municipality on Okinawa Island, and its 5.18 km² on Nakagusuku Bay, about 9 km east of Naha, hold about 19,000 people and the junction where Route 329 meets the Route 331 coast road.
Yonabaru sits on the flat shore of Nakagusuku Bay between two wooded hills, Amagoi-mori at 133 m and Untama-mori at 158 m. Untama-mori is where the folk outlaw Untama Giru hid, a story widely known in Okinawa and the basis of the film Untamagiru.
Before the war Yonabaru was the terminus of the light railway and the horse tramway, and the restaurants around the station made it famous for Yonabaru soba, the first Okinawa soba named for a place. The railway was destroyed in the war and the old shops did not come back; today the name survives on a noodle maker's packets.
