The beach opened in April 2000 and it is Nanjo's flagship, with white sand, a lawn, showers and lockers, a shop and a campground, and a netted swimming area. It was designed as a universal beach, and mobi-chairs and matting let wheelchair users reach the water's edge. Kudaka sits on the horizon to the east, and the sun comes up from behind it.
Azama port is next door, so the beach fits neatly around a day trip to Kudaka. Marine activities and trips to the tiny Ukabi islet run from the beach, and the operator posts each morning whether swimming and marine sports are on.
Before you swim
- Habu-kurage box jellyfish appear from May to October; Okinawa nets many swimming beaches from June to October against them, and vinegar poured on a sting before removing tentacles is the standard first aid.
- Swim inside the netted area.
- Marine activities stop on windy days; the beach posts the day's status each morning.
December to March
Swimming season ends in October, but marine sports run year-round with wetsuits for hire at ¥1,500, and the barbecue and campground stay open. The beach faces east toward Kudaka and catches the northeast wind; on windy days marine activities are cancelled.
